Steady / Foal Tabs
Steady Tab – Dog Training
Is your dog struggling with steadiness? The steady tab might be just what you need!
It can be really frustrating having a dog run in on a retrieve, but steady tabs are a simple yet very effective piece of equipment that can help us achieve our goal of steadiness!
Our steady tabs simply loop onto the D-ring (where you clip the lead) of your dog's collar. We don’t use clips because we believe simplicity is better than overcomplicating things we don’t need.
How to Use
Rather than having to take a lead on and off—creating a lot of distraction and flustering—you can now ditch the lead! Simply hold the end of the tab, then, when you're ready to release your dog, all you have to do is drop the tab! It’s that simple. Then, when your dog comes back, you can simply grab the tab, ready for the next retrieve.
Our steady tabs are super lightweight, meaning they don’t interfere with the dog—they won’t even know they’re wearing one! Quite often, I’ve seen heavy steady tabs with large balls or loops on the end, which can be really annoying and off-putting for the dog. As they run, these heavier tabs hit them in the face—not helpful when trying to carry a retrieve! With our steady tabs, you’ll notice they naturally hang low on the dog’s chest, creating minimal distraction.
Like our other products, our steady tabs are made from paracord. The plaited design makes for the perfect grippy material, even in wet weather.
Did you know you can wash your tab? If it gets grubby from use, simply pop it in the washing machine at a low temperature (20°C/30°C max). Make sure to put it in a wash bag or sock for protection, and it should come out as good as new!
Total Length: 9”
Plaited Length: 7”
Remember, dogs should always be supervised while wearing collars and steady tabs.
Foal Tab – Horse Taming
The idea for the foal tab stemmed from when I decided to purchase four feral foals from Dartmoor! They were completely wild and untouched—getting a head collar on was a challenge. Even with head collars on, they were still hard to catch! Someone suggested using some baling twine as a foal tab, and it did help a great deal. It’s far less scary being caught from further away than right in your face. However, the baling twine would quickly get ruined and need replacing. It also frayed very quickly, and on one occasion, a foal nearly ate the loose fibers… not a good idea!
When I looked on the market, I couldn’t find anything—I really mean nothing! Then I remembered the steady tabs I made for dogs and thought, why not try it and see? It turned out they were the perfect solution—just what I needed!
The tabs could be left on the ponies in all weathers without bothering them. Thanks to the plaited design, they had great grip even in the rain. Lightweight and unobtrusive, the foals didn’t even know they were wearing them. The tabs didn’t interfere with anything the foals did; they just made it far easier to catch, handle, and tame them. Plus, they looked much nicer!
Horses, ponies, and foals shouldn’t be left with head collars and tabs on unsupervised.
As these products are handmade to order, please allow 1 - 2 weeks for completion.
If you require your steady tab to be shorter, please leave a comment when you go to buy your tab!
